A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it

A reflection on comparison, yoga and supporting other women without losing sight of your own pace and progress.

“A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms.” That idea stays with me because comparison can quietly turn growth into a race.

It is easy to look at someone else’s body, work, relationships, confidence or yoga practice and decide that we are behind. But we rarely see the full story behind what we are comparing ourselves with.

Different bodies, different journeys

Yoga makes this very visible. Two people can practise beside one another and move completely differently. One body may fold deeply into a posture; another may need support, a shorter range or a different variation altogether.

That difference is not failure. Experience, anatomy, energy, mobility and the kind of day we are having all affect how movement feels.

Comparison steals attention from your own progress

When most of our attention is fixed on what another person can do, we lose the opportunity to notice our own changes. Progress may be quieter than a dramatic pose. It can look like better awareness, more confidence, steadier breathing, stronger boundaries or simply showing up consistently.

Support does not require sameness

I love the idea of women growing alongside one another without needing to become identical. Someone else’s strength does not reduce yours. Their progress does not take anything away from your own path.

In movement, work and everyday life, there is room for admiration without self-criticism. We can learn from one another while still respecting our own pace.

Come back to your own side of the fence

When comparison starts to feel loud, try asking a simpler question: what would growth look like for me right now?

Maybe it is practising one pose with more patience. Maybe it is resting. Maybe it is speaking to yourself with more kindness. Blooming does not need to look the same for everyone.
